The pions reach the end of their range in a layer of gelatin, 5 μm thick, ‘sandwiched’ between layers of C2 emulsion. Since they occur in the insensitive gelatine, the origins of the disintegrations are not recorded, and they must be attributed to nuclear capture by carbon, oxygen or nitrogen (light elements in the gelatin).
